About Fort McKay Fiber Mill

view of the end of the mill building and the side of the wash buildingThe Fort McKay Fiber Mill, established September 2025, is located in the Umpqua Valley, in Douglas County, Oregon. Nearby towns and establishments include Sutherlin, Oakland, Umpqua, and Roseburg. The farm has had sheep grazing its pastures since the early 1960's. While the sheep industry in the county has taken its "twists and turns", many people in the area continue to spin fiber into yarn for knitting and weaving. It is our pleasure to provide a cottage fiber mill to support these artisans, southwest Oregon, and across the nation.

My name is Cindy Liesinger, owner/manager of The Fort McKay Fiber Mill. Along with my husband, Scott, we would like to thank you for visiting our website, and considering our services.

My interest in fiber arts began over 10 years ago when I learned to knit (with the help of Scott's mother). After working in a yarn shop in Salem, Oregon, and attending a couple fiber events in nearby Albany, Oregon, I wanted to learn more about the process of how yarn was made from the fleece of a sheep, or blanket of an alpaca.

Before jumping straight into the milling business though, I decided I should first learn how to spin and make my own yarn. I joined the local Umpqua Weaving and Spinning Guild, where I have received tremendous support learning about all the different breeds of sheep and camelids, spinning wheels, weaving looms, and how to make my own yarn to knit with.

From there, after visiting the Rodger Family Farm and Fiber Mill in Lebanon, Oregon, and the Brother Drum Carder factory in Silverton, Oregon, we decided to pursue our dream of starting a cottage wool mill, where we take your raw fiber and card it into batts or roving for you to spin into yarn.

Thank you for considering us for your next fiber project. Please contact me if you have questions, or would like to discuss some aspect of your project.
